welcome to summer...i guess...
this past week or so has been, well, interesting and dreadfully boring all at the same time. last weekend i went to austin, texas with my mom and my sister for a family reunion.
ahhh...that lovely summer event...the family reunion.
now, everyone had been looking forward to this for a long time now. i mean, like since october. i was all excited about meeting all of these family members that i hadn't met before and seeing the ones i see all the time and going to texas because i was only there once as a baby...it was gonna be great!
i should have known we were in for trouble when our plane headed out was delayed for 2 1/2 hours. spending hours of the morning that i rarely see in Newark Airport (screw the Liberty part...no one around here says that) is not my ideal beginning to a weekend. i have also decided to never name any of my children Carter or Natalie. i have two toddlers by the same names to thank for that, as i had to hear their names over and over again while we were waiting for the stupid plane.
so we finally get on the freaking plane for our 3 1/2 hour journey. no in-flight entertainment. while i understand that that last statement makes me sound totally spoiled, i ask you to ponder this: why would the same airline offer in-flight entertainment on a 3 hour flight to ft. lauderdale, but not on a 3 1/2 hour flight to austin? grrrr..... fast forward to landing. i may or may not have had a sinus infection for the past two weeks now (more on that later if i feel like it), so my ears are all messed up as it is. i was in so much pain that i forgot to be scared about landing. i thought my eardrums were going to burst. but i survived.
fast forward to the hotel. we got there around the same time as all off our close relatives (grandma, grandpa, uncle, aunt, 2 cousins) did, so it was all hugs and questions about the flight and all that great stuff. we eventually find out that the only activities planned for this family reunion are dinner on friday and saturday nights. yay. so dinner on friday was god awful boring (except for my grandmother dropping the p-bomb, aka, telling everyone my sister goes to princeton). my sister and i spent the time amusing ourselves by entertaining my two baby cousins (ages 5 and 19 months).
saturday: family trip to the outlet mall, where i managed to score my first Coach bag (well, it's really a wristlet, but who really cares...it's Coach!) as a graduation present. yay! i figure it's a perfect rite-of-passage gift and a perfect jersey-girl status symbol.
i also learned a great parenting technique. observe:
aunt to 5 year old cousin: if you stay perfectly quiet from now until we get to the mall, i'll give you a dollar.
5 year old cousin: (immediately stops endless chatter and stays quiet for the next 25 minutes)
25 minutes later, we pull into our parking spot, my cousin holds out his tiny little hand, and recieves a dollar for his efforts.
on the way back to the hotel, i was asking my sister if she had any cash...my cousin was jabbering on about spiderman again.
saturday night: dinner with everybody again. also god awful boring. i'll spare the awful details and just say that if i never see another pink cowboy hat or hear the harmonica ever again, i shall die a happy woman.
sunday: back to the airport. plane delayed 25 minutes. played parking lot bingo on the long term parking shuttle at Newark
bus driver: stop 32.....(silence)....stop 35
various passengers: yes!
bus driver: stop 43....46......47....
my sister and mom: yes!
me, simultaneously: bingo!
unfortunately, my sinus problem has made it hard for me to speak loudly enough and to hear things correctly, so no one heard my delightfully smart-ass comment.
so can i talk about how good it feels to be back in jersey? the best part about coming home was when the plane was taxiing to the gate at newark. the guy across the aisle from me had started to gather up his stuff so he could get off the plane as soon as possible (which is rather stupid, because we were in the very back of the plane). his carry on bag was in the aisle, and one of the stewardesses told him that he had to get it out of the aisle until we had reached the gate. the guy sees the other stewardess standing up and taking care of some things in the galley. the guy then says "i'll move my bag when she sits down." he had a point. but it was just the way he said it that made me chuckle on the inside. ah, jersey: be it ever so hostile, there's no place like home.
the rest of my week has consisted of lying around the house feeling miserable and bored. i went to the doctor yesterday and he's not quite sure if i have a sinus infection or not. lovely. so i have to take these giant decongestants twice a day and nose spray every morning. i hate nose spray. if all goes well, i won't have to go on antibiotics. knowing my luck, i probably will. that means no beer for 10 days. dammit.
blarrrgh...this is like, one of the most pointless and boring blogs ever, but i guess it's just reflecting my pointless and boring mood. i go back to work tomorrow, which should be amusing. considering my sinus problem, the guests are going to think i'm either deaf or slightly retarded. then again, that's how i often get treated there anyway, so nothing will be new.
no progress on the resume...i'm hoping to be inspired soon, though.
blarrrgghhhhhh...... and *sigh*
