Another Public Service Announcement
This is another reminder to you all that the deadline to register to vote is quickly approaching. If you've been following this blog for a while, this should not be an issue because you have already followed my orders to get registered. If you have not registered yet, there is still time.
But not a lot of time.
Get registered today. You can go to your local post office or library or city hall and pickup the form. It takes all of 5 minutes to do it. If you're allergic to libraries or post offices or city halls, you can go to your candidate's campaign office. I can guarantee you that if you're looking for an Obama office, there's one pretty close to you. Don't want to go there? Hop on the interwebs (you're already there right now) and go to Rock the Vote.
You must, must, must, must get out there and get registered.
And then you better get your ass out and vote. I'd prefer if you voted for Obama, but I'll still (albeit begrudgingly) somewhat respect you if you at least go to the polls.
This election is so huge, it's beyond words.
If your state holds early voting, please take advantage of it. Why wait in line on November 4th when you can get your vote in early? Then you can't give me some BS line like, "Oh, I went to the polls on Election Day, but the line was too long and I had to go to work, so I didn't vote." This election is way too important to allow some excuse like that.
I'd also like to encourage all the Obama supporters out there to get involved with the campaign in some way. I decided to get involved after the announcement of Sarah Palin as McCain's running mate because I knew that this was a huge distraction to the task at hand. I also had to put my money where my mouth is. For all of the preaching that I have done on here about the importance of this election and registering and voting, I knew it wasn't enough just to yell at the blogosphere. So I got someone to register at a party last weekend. I've spent time in a phone bank asking for voter support.
If I can do it, so can you.
We're all busy, but there are ways to help. Get a stack of voter registration forms and get people registered. Volunteer to make phone calls. Even if you only sit there for an hour a week, you're making a difference. Join a canvassing team and knock on doors. If you can't volunteer your time, check in with your local campaign office and see if they have any need for office supplies. Or cases of water for canvassers. Buy a few pizzas for the office staff and volunteers. Grab some bumper stickers to give to all your friends. Or, if you're really ballin', write a check.
Talk to your parents and ask them if they're registered to vote. Talk to your grandparents. Maybe someone in your neighborhood needs a ride to the polls on Election Day.
There are so many ways that you can help and make it fit into your schedule. Do it.
And if you're still apathetic...
If you don't care about this election, you're probably not planning on doing any of the following:
1. Securing a job that will pay you a fair wage that covers the cost of living.
2. Getting sick and having access to affordable health care.
3. Sending your children to college without bankrupting yourself.
4. Buying a house.
5. Retiring at an age when you can actually enjoy being retired.
If you don't care about the election, you don't care about the environment. If you don't care about the election, you don't care about bringing home the men and women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, many of whom are your age or even younger. If you don't care about the election, you don't care about your reproductive rights or the rights of any daughters you may have in the future. Don't care about the election? You must not care about repairing our relations with other countries and preventing future wars and terrorist attacks. If you don't care about the election, you don't care about America, which is a shame if you are blessed enough to be a citizen.
People of all races and genders have fought and died so you can live in a country where you have this right to vote. And as fucked up as America is right now, we're still pretty lucky to be where we are.
So I am begging you: If you have not done so already, please get registered to vote. And when it's time to vote, vote. There really isn't anything else more important that you can do this year than get to the polls. We cannot be complacent. We cannot allow another four years to go by like the past eight that we have managed (barely) to survive.
Please, please, please vote.
