"Enough about you, let's talk about life for awhile"
That's the best title that I could come up with today. Sorry. All of my genius has gone into the idea that I have for this blog right now. Today I feel like talking about the news. There's some interesting things going on in the news, and there's some crap that's going on too. I just feel like putting my ideas out there. That's what blogs are for. So if you're down for my week in review, read on. If not, come back tomorrow or whenever I update again. I'll be back to my normal tales of melodrama.
All right then, we've got a lot to cover, so let's get moving! Just a note: The stories I'm covering are talked about in no particular order of time, importance, whatever. I'm not a journalist. Just a blogger. Ok!
The Schiavo Case
No, no! Don't go away! I won't say much, I promise.
Once again, the nation has been divided over this poor woman's life. People want her to live. People want her to die with dignity. Our opinions really don't matter. The big thing in all of this is that politicians have been using a private family matter as a public arena for their political agendas. They're using this to win future votes. These politicians are going into Congress and using valuable time on Hail Mary bills when they need to be fixing problems that will affect us all. The federal government should have left it up to the Florida courts in the first place, and the Florida courts will decide the outcome. That's all I've got to say about that.
Moving on...
MJ and Porn?!?
This week in the Michael Jackson trial, the prosecution produced volume after volume of porn magazines as evidence that MJ allegedly showed his 13 year old accuser the porn as part of the alleged molestation.
By the way, this stuff wasn't gay porn either. Just regular straight porn. ABC News reports that one of the titles was "Hustler Barely Legal Hardcore."
Ok, I've just about had it.
1) There are twice as many reporters covering the Jackson trial as there are reporters covering Iraq.
2) The Jackson trial is apparently so crucial that we need to know that he possibly reads Hustler.
Does anyone else see a problem with this?
Onward to some business news...
K-Mart and Sears seal the deal; Blockbuster ends quest for global domination
K-Mart and Sears Roebuck have finalized their 11-point-something billion deal and are the Sears Holding Corp., the third largest retailer in the nation. And there was much rejoicing.
(crickets)
Ok, so we don't really care yet. I mean, K-Mart bought Sears, so that's a kinda scary thought. But think about what this could mean for the retail world. The plan of the new company is to bring Sears stores into the stand alone market as well as improving their mall stores. Now, if they manage to maintain the Sears brand image and sell the right stuff, they could give Wal-Mart aka The Evil Empire a run for their money.
I hallucinate.
Maybe they could bring some variety back into the market and give me somewhere else to shop if I don't feel like going to Target aka Best Store Ever. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.
Blockbuster Video backed down from talks to acquire Hollywood Video, claiming probable FTC antitrust interference. Duh. Besides, Blockbuster needs to get its act straight with the whole "No Late Fees" claim. Renter beware: If you don't return that flick in a week, they charge your card for the retail price of the DVD/tape! That means that they want you to keep that fingerprint-plagued copy of Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle because they made money off of you. I hope the class action suits in NJ are successful.
Final stretch, kids...
The Minnesota Incident
Earlier this week, there was another deadly shooting at a northern Minnesota high school. My first thought when I heard this (and I will probably rot in hell for doing so), "Another school shooting? Dude, that is so 1998."
Yes, we all remember the string of shootings that happened in the late 90's, mainly Columbine and Pearl. And once again, here we are, asking each other why it happens.
It happens because teenagers are assholes.
Not the shooters, mind you. I'm talking about the kids that drove them to shoot. We have this whole national mentality that kids will be kids, and teasing is normal. That's bullshit. The only way to stop the shooting is to stop the torture. People don't want to do that, though. They're holding on to this frat-boy-hazing-ritual-esque belief that "I got teased as a kid too. It's a part of growing up. You just learn how to deal with it, and you come out stronger." Well, kids aren't dealing with it too well. They just grab a semi-automatic and let that solve their problems. Oh, and the "video game defense" is bullshit too.
Thus endeth my week in review(-eth).
Hopefully you enjoyed my experiment. Don't worry, I'm not going to become an armchair journalist or anything. Journalists aren't allowed to have opinions anymore.
